I find it so deeply fascinating that there are medieval and possibly even ancient texts (I can’t remember specifics rn but I definitely saw one from early medieval Europe recently) that are like “oh if only I lived in an earlier age when there was literal magic in the world”

I feel like nowadays people project that back ONTO the middle ages, but even back then they were like “there used to be magic and now it’s gone”

its magic turtles all the way down etc etc

temporally universal complaints (traced back at least 2000 years):

“kids these days just aren’t working hard like they used to”

“young women sure are dressing skimpier than when I was growing up”

“it’s so sad the age of magic in the world has passed”

In your opinion, is a bull a cow?

Yes

No

@bovineblogger any thoughts?

colloquially, yes! it all depends on what you personally would call a cow! when you get into semantics it makes a it a bit more confusing.

image

because to farmers, ‘cow’ only refers to female cattle that have given birth! a heifer is a female that hasn’t, a steer/ox is a castrated male, a freemartin is a female that was masculinized in the womb, a bull is an uncastrated male…. blablabla!

to add another layer, 'cow’ and 'bull’ arent labels exclusive to cattle! a female yak (that has had a calf) would be called a cow, while a(n uncastrated) male yak would be called a bull!

image
image

but those distinctions dont really matter if you’re not the one keeping the animals. to the average person a bull would be considered a cow, because that’s just the word a lot of people use for cattle! i dont think arguing over what 'cow’ really means is useful because, just like all language, people use it differently!

thanks for coming to my ted talk. :3

Am I In A Cult?

Every so often, you have to sit without yourself and think, “am I in a cult?” This goes for everyone and it’s really important to do so.

Consider:

1. Is there an out group I’m supposed to hate?

2. Is a group telling me they’re the only safe people?

3. Am I being told to distance myself or stop contacting my loved ones?

4. Am I being asked to risk my life or others’ lives? (This one is iffy, but still should be on the list.)

5. Am I being told that my group is above the law?

6. Am I asked to self censor? Am I punished for asking questions?

7. Am I worried about losing all my friends and social network if I step out of line?

8. Have other people called me an extremist?

9. Am I being told to follow one person or organization and not question it?

Everyone is susceptible to cults. Everyone!

This isn’t about any particular group or ideology. But there are a lot of groups online that are falling into cult behaviors and we need to be aware of that and stop it immediately.

You don’t have to get a perfect score to start questioning shit.

Given that was half the point of the post (that the online left has become a very high control group if not outright a cult), not only will you not be shot, I am bringing you digital bimuelos

The interesting thing about Glados/HAL 9000 parallels is that

Hal was conceived at a time when artificial intelligence was more of a fictional construct than a practical possibility. Hal is introduced as humanlike because the audience is familiar with and comfortable with humans, but they aren’t familiar with or comfortable with living computers. It’s when he starts acting robotic and calculated that the audience realizes “oh no, he’s a computer” and he becomes threatening.

By the time Glados was conceived, we had become used to computer automated systems. Synthetic voices offering us information is something we encounter in daily life. Glados is introduced as a computerized preprogrammed voice because that’s what the audience is familiar and comfortable with. It’s when she starts acting human and emotional that the audience realizes “oh no, she’s alive” and she becomes threatening.
